The nunchaku comes from Okinawa ,
today a part of Japan.
Many think that the nunchaku
descended from the rice flail,
but this is incorrect.
The actual Okinawan flail, like the
European flail, has a handle as long as
a man's height to make the
flogging
process easier.
A possible reason for this error in
belief, besides its resemblance to the
nunchaku, may be the existence of the a
combat flail, which really is a modified
rice flail.
The most credible version that the
nunchaku descends from an Okinawan horse
bit. Initially the handles of the
nunchaku were curved. Later it was
changed to the straight-handled weapon
that we know today.
